A Journey into Val Dogà: Our Homegrown Carbon Offset Project
On May 8th, we had the chance to take part in a hands-on, insightful, and inspiring experience in the field of sustainability: a visit to Val Dogà, one of the projects we support to offset our residual emissions.
Located in the Venetian Lagoon near the Sile River, Val Dogà is a historic fishing valley covering over 1,700 hectares, with around 1,000 hectares of brackish water basins. A system of mobile gates ensures water circulation, which is essential for maintaining the ecological balance and overall health of the environment.
In this unique setting, a natural carbon capture and storage process takes place. During warmer months, macroalgae and phytoplankton absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis. As temperatures drop, these organisms die and settle into the muddy lagoon floor, permanently storing the carbon — all without any mechanical intervention.
This natural process happens year after year and generates certified carbon credits under the βNeutral program, based on the UNI/PdR 99:2021 technical guidelines. Certification is managed by D&D Consulting, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and traceability.
We are proud to support this initiative — one of the very first carbon offset projects entirely developed in Italy — as part of our broader ESG strategy.
Val Dogà also plays a crucial role in protecting the local ecosystem. Without regular care and maintenance, the area would face silt build-up and oxygen depletion, putting both biodiversity and fish farming at risk.
Today, it stands as a biodiversity hotspot, home to several protected plant and animal species including marsh harriers, glossy ibises, grey herons, foxes, and mullets. It’s a clear example of how nature, when responsibly managed, can actively contribute to climate solutions.
A special thanks to Up2You, our trusted partner in this journey toward climate action, for making this experience possible.
